Tenor, Eduardo Valdes made his debut with
the Metropolitan Opera as part of the ensemble in the production of Britten's Death in Venice during the 1993-94 season. Since, his
assignments have included Der Rosenkavalier, Ghost of
Versailles, La Traviata, Rigoletto, Merry Widow, Mefistofele, Il Trovatore, The Gambler, Le mamelles de Teresias,
Sly,
Norma, Il Pirata, Turandot, Les Trojens, Lucia di Lammermoor, Nabucco,
and Otello, among others. He also performed the Duke in Rigoletto during the Met's
parks season. This season he
debuted with the Spoleto Festival, USA as the Jester and the Prince in
Respighi's rarety La bella dormente nel Bosco receiving rave
reviews.
The Charleston City Paper exclaimed:
"Tenor Eduardo Valdes as the Jester &
the Prince has an ebullient personality that spills out in his singing
which he makes appear so carefree. His voice floats off his tongue and
rolls over the audience's heads so soothingly and naturally that if it
were food it would be liquid chocolate."
This season also includes Met
performances of Turandot, Carmen, Samson and Delilah, Nabucco,
and Vespri Sicialiani. In 2002-03, he
appeared in the Metropolitan Opera gala with Placido Domingo and Mirella
Freni in the opera Fedora which was recorded for PBS and released
in Video/ DVD. In 1997, Mr. Valdes sang 25 performances of Beppe in Pagliacci with
the Metropolitan Opera including the Texaco Radio Broadcast, the Japan tour and the Met in the parks series.
In 1995-96 season
he returned to the Met for Pique Dame, Alfredo in La
Traviata with the New York City Opera and Ferrando in Cosi fan
tutte with the Opera de Puerto Rico. He made his debut in Mexico as
Rodolfo in
La Boheme and Alfredo in La Traviata with the Orquesta
Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico under the Maestro Enrique Batiz. In the
summer of 1997, he opened the Cassal's Festival with
El Pessebre, which was telecast on A&E
Network.
Senator Edward Kennedy invited Mr. Valdes
to perform for the King and Queen of Spain at a dinner honoring the
Royals in Boston. He returned to the Met for Brighella in Ariadne auf
Naxos; a debut with the Opera Carolina as the Duke in Rigoletto
and recorded The Silver Messenger by Roberto Sierra with the
Bronx Ensemble for New World Records.
Other appearances included Nemorino
with El Paso Opera and Palm Beach Opera, Don Ottavio with Lake George Opera Festival, Duke of
Mantua with Boston Lyric Opera, Alfredo at the Charles Ives Center under
Mo. William Crutchfield, Lacouf in Les Mamelles de Teresias and
Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia with The Juilliard Opera
Center, Lindoro in L'Italiana in algeri. With the Israel Vocal
Arts Institute he performed Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Belmonte
in Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte,
Tonio in La fille du regiment and Arturo in I Puritani and
Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with the Rhode Island Summer Opera.
On the concert stage he has sung
L'enfant Prodigue with the Symphony Orchestra of Puerto Rico and
Chaguin in Roberto Sierra's El Mensajero de Plata for the New
York premier in Merkin Hall. Other appearances include Musica de Camara
of New York in an all German Program, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the
opening concert of the Art Song Festival in Cleveland in and all Spanish
program.
Mr. Valdes hails from Puerto Rico and
holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Mount Union College and a
Master of Music degree from Cleveland Institute of Music and Case
Western Reserve University. |
